Ekos is an Ōtautahi Christchurch based artist, entrepreneur and father. With roots in graffiti and tattoo, his work explores and consider typography as a formal tool, layering calligraphic forms into patterned constructions that draw the viewer in with flowing, interlocking, expressive and controlled text that builds upon itself. Rather than deciphering text as communication, the viewer is invited to reflect on the holistic, combinative effects of typography as art.

The Phantom Bollard has been an ongoing site for The Little Street Art Festival, the circular form adorned with a variety of projects that reflect the shared interests of Phantom and Watch This Space.

In 2025, we welcome typographic master Ekos as the latest artist to transform the prominent pillar with his Ductus project! Ekos, whose graffiti and tattoo backgrounds inform his calligraphic explorations of form and composition, will reimagine the surface, painting live on the opening weekend of the festival. Utilising letterforms and typography as objects with which to suggest spatial dynamics, while also recognising the communicative performance of bollard spaces, Ekos’ work is sure to be show-stopping!

Ductus refers to the the specific order and direction of strokes used to form a letter in gothic calligraphy — a suggestion of the process and flow necessary in constructing bold letterforms.

Ekos will paint live on Manchester Street on Saturday 6th December.
